Character name: Discord
Fandom: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Timeline: Taken after the events of “Keep Calm and Flutter On”
Age: OOOOOOOLD. At least a millennium and then some.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Discord is the spirit of Disharmony and Chaos in Equestria; in short, his magical expertise lies in warping the fabric of reality and rearranging it to his liking. This is exhibited in a number of ways: Turning clouds into cotton candy and making chocolate milk rain, altering physical biology (such as removing the wings and horns from pegasi and unicorns or making rabbits have long, horse-like legs), creating various items seemingly out of thin air, transformation, hypnosis, illusions, messing with the rising and falling of the sun and moon, among other chaotic things. Essentially, if it’s ridiculous and chaotic, he has the capability to do it. He also has the power to corrupt harmonious entities: making normally kind, generous, and loyal ponies turn cruel, greedy, and disloyal alternates of themselves (This power, however was only used against the main six characters, and has not been seen using these particular powers on any other pony). That’s not to say that he’s invincible; he has been taken down twice, both times by the Elements of Harmony (a set of magical artifacts that hold the power of friendship and order, which were powerful enough to counter a spirit of disharmony and chaos).
How would they use their abilities?: Discord’s main goal is to have a good time; meaning, everything he does is just a big joke to him, part of a giant game. If he really wanted he could seriously destroy things, as any villain would do, but where’s the fun in that? So while his actions may be unpleasant and sometimes harmful, they aren’t strictly malicious. He’s just having a good time, at the expense of others.
Appearance: Discord is described as a ‘draconequus’, which is essentially a chimera of sorts. He has the head of a goat or pony, possessing two horns (one being a white deer antler and the other being a blue, curvy goat horn) two disproportionate-sized eyes, one dragon tooth, a snake’s tongue, and a goat’s beard. His body is serpentine, the middle being that of a griffin and his tail being that of a red dragon. He has four different limbs; his right arm is a lion’s paw while the left is an eagle’s talon, while one leg is that of a moose or deer while the other is green and reptilian like a lizard’s. He also possesses two wings, one being a purple bat’s wing and the other being a blue feathered wing.

Background/Personality:
In the distant past, Discord had once ruled over Equestria as a king. Due to his chaotic nature, all of the ponies (which consist of earth (or regular) ponies, pegasi, and unicorns) of Equestria lived in misery and unhappiness, unable to combat the powerful magic that Discord had possessed. It isn’t stated how long Discord had ruled over Equestria, but chaos had reigned for a significant amount of time until he was challenged by Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, sisters who controlled the powers of the Sun and the Moon. The princess sisters were Alicorns, powerful ponies that possessed both wings and horns, giving them the ability to fly like Pegasi and wield magic like Unicorns. Using the powers of the Elements of Harmony, they were able to overthrow Discord and end his reign of chaos. Discord himself was turned into a stone statue, where he remained imprisoned for eons (hinted at by Discord himself, who states that he hadn’t had so much fun in eons).
Flash forward to the present date. The Elements of Harmony have done a great job of keeping Discord in check for centuries and have allowed the Princesses to rule Equestria peacefully. This would have continued had a series of events not occurred. First was the rebellion of Princess Luna against Celestia, becoming the fierce figure Nightmare Moon. She was defeated by Princess Celestia and imprisoned on the moon under a spell that, while powerful, would weaken and re-release her after some time. The second event was this eventual release of Nightmare Moon, who was once again defeated. This time she was defeated not by Celestia, but by the main characters, or Mane Six: Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash. These ponies, each representing a separate Element of Harmony, were able to use the Elements of Harmony to defeat and purify Nightmare Moon, reverting her back into Princess Luna.
This particular event was significant because since the Elements of Harmony answered to the Mane Six instead of Princess Celestia, her control over them was gone, and thus the spell keeping Discord locked away had weakened, allowing the spirit of disharmony to break free from his prison. When strange events begin plaguing Ponyville, Princess Celestia summons Twilight Sparkle and her friends and explains Discord and his history. She grants them access to the Elements of Harmony, but discovers that they have been stolen by Discord (since they were hidden in a chamber protected by a spell that only she could break, which didn’t make sense (hence Discord’s involvement)). Discord appears in the stained-glass windows of the castle and explains where he has hidden the elements with a riddle, leading Twilight to believe he hid the Elements in the Canterlot castle labyrinth.
Discord allows Twilight and her friends to search for the Elements in the form of a ‘game’, but instills a few rules: First, no flying and no magic allowed (this is enforced by Discord magically removing Rarity and Twilight’s horns and Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy’s wings). Second, they must all play the game, or else he wins. He then separates them into the labyrinth and allows them to search for the Elements. However, this was part of his plan to win his ‘game’: Using his magic, he tricks the other ponies into contradictions of their elements: Applejack, representing honesty, becomes untruthful; Pinkie Pie becomes angry and disagreeable instead of fun and full of laughter; Rarity becomes selfish and greedy instead of generous; Fluttershy, representing kindness, becomes cruel. When he approaches Rainbow Dash, who represents loyalty, he tricks her into thinking that her hometown of Cloudsdale would be destroyed without her, and offers her the choice of getting her wings back to go help her hometown or staying to play the game. Taking the bait, she flies out of the labyrinth and breaks Discord's "no flying and no magic" rule, thus making him the ‘winner’ of the game; he destroys the labyrinth and states that the ponies have lost. Twilight is upset at Discord’s unfairness, but Discord states that he never said that the elements were in the labyrinth; instead, he was hinting they were back at Ponyville.
Reveling in his victory, Discord begins to wreak havoc all over Ponyville, using his magic to wreak chaos throughout the town and reform it into his ‘Capital of Chaos’. His victory almost seems assured at this point; Twilight Sparkle and her friends were out of commission because of Discord’s trickery, and as such the Elements of Harmony weren’t working on him. Indeed, Discord would have been victorious had Twilight Sparkle not received aid from Princess Celestia in the form of each letter Twilight had written since coming to Ponyville. The letters documented the lessons of friendship she had learned, and thus Twilight was able to snap out of Discord’s spell and remember the real meaning of friendship. After helping free her friends from Discord’s influence, the six manage to use the Elements of Harmony to trap Discord in a stone statue once more, undoing all his magic and restoring peace once more.
While Discord had been successfully detained, Twilight Sparkle and her friends are visited in Ponyville once again by Princess Celestia, only this time for another reason: She states that Discord’s magic, while chaotic, was very powerful and would be a great asset if used for good. The princess tasks Twilight Sparkle and her friends to help reform Discord to use magic obediently of his own free will, thus making him an ally. Naturally, the ponies are nervous for undertaking such a daunting task, but they agree nonetheless.
Discord is naturally reluctant at first, residing with Fluttershy as she tries to befriend him and for the most part taking advantage of her hospitality and enduring patience. However, he is genuinely surprised to hear that Fluttershy defends Discord’s actions and considers him a friend, the first and only friend he’s ever had. Things become heated when an earlier prank pulled by Discord results in the flooding of Applejack’s home, Sweet Apple Acres. When Fluttershy asks him to return things back the way they were, he offers her a deal; he will comply only if she refuses to use her Element of Harmony against him. Fluttershy agrees, and Discord betrays her, freezing the water and claiming that he is finally free to do whatever he wants without consequence. Discord then offers Fluttershy to skate on the frozen water. While Fluttershy keeps her own promise, she renounces her friendship with him and walks away.
At first, Discord brags about how nobody can tell him what to do, and he asks if Fluttershy really believes that he cared if he lost his one and only friend. To his surprise, this causes an epiphany in Discord; he realizes that now that he’s experienced friendship of his own, he doesn’t want to lose it. As a result he undoes his magic and returns things back the way they were. Princess Celestia comes back to collect Discord, who is somewhat embarrassed to admit that “friendship is magic” and promises to use his magic for good... most of the time. He then leaves with Celestia to return to Canterlot.
Personality-wise, Discord is a mischievous, manipulative trickster who enjoys having a good laugh and doing things for his own amusement, often at the cost of others’ suffering. He has a strong sense of showmanship and drama, and will often be playful with his ‘audience’ before getting down to business, and isn’t above taunting or bantering even with those who possess the power to imprison him. Discord has an almost childish persona; Arrogant and overconfident in his own abilities, yet becomes easily annoyed when things don’t go his way. He is prone to pouting if his plans don’t fall through, and will resort to using more powerful magic if it results in him getting his way. However, this lack of restraint or empathy is implied to come from his never having a friend, as once he gains friendship with Fluttershy he is willing to undo his own chaos if it means keeping a friend. While it’s too early to tell now, it’s possible that Discord may become less of a malevolent trickster and be more compassionate to others thanks to his newfound friendship.
Have you read up on how the game works?: Yep. The Guide Plugin is the Flaming Ferret, and the three ways to get money are by working missions, freelance work, or mooching.
1st person sample:
[It’s a very odd scene that is being captured by the Guide’s feed from the New Arrivals area. For one thing, it looks like it’s raining. However, if one were to examine the strange, viscous puddles created from the ‘rain’, it appears that the substance is actually Strawberry syrup. In the midst of all this strangeness is a very odd looking creature; it looks like a chimera, with no two body parts matching up. The draconic chimera grins a wide grin into the Guide’s feed.]
Hello everypony! I must say, when you’re a creature of chaos you get used to seeing all sorts of things, but this certainly takes the cake!
[He snaps his fingers, and in a flash a nearby chair is transformed into a chair-shaped cake, quickly getting drizzled by the raining syrup. He picks up a piece and tosses it into his mouth.]
Mm! [He licks his fingers and looks back at the Guide.] In any case, this place seems like it would be much more fun than Ponyville! An entire ship fueled by chaos? Why haven’t I been told before??
[Another snap of his fingers, and suddenly a reclining beach chair appears, complete with umbrella. ] I think I’m going to like it here. I might even make a few changes while I’m enjoying my stay, to add a few personal touches.
3rd person sample:
Equestria was gone, or at least that’s what the weird creatures had told him. Gone, blown up, kaboom. Strangely enough, Discord had no knowledge of such an event happening. Surely he would remember such a monumental event as the entirety of Equestria being destroyed! Instead, he had woken up, confused and disoriented in an unfamiliar place, being told that this was his new home.
Well, naturally, this sort of news just made Discord excited.
Not to say he was glad that Equestria was gone! That would be silly; after all, it was a world where he held substantial power due to his control of chaos. No, the reason that he was so excited was the very idea that everything was so new. And not only that, after listening to the explanations he had been given, he discovered that the entire ship was powered by something called an Improbability Drive – a device that was, essentially, purely chaotic in its activation. A space ship run entirely by the forces of chaos? It was like this place was made just for him!
Whatever happened to Equestria would be dealt with when time permitted it to be; for now, the spirit of chaos was more interested in figuring out just how much chaos this ship could contain.
